Windows 8

Post by Swissdiving »

Hello Sven,

What about the implementation of DivingLog on Win8?
Will it be possible to download dives on a Win8 tablet (ARM)?
Cheers,

Hansjoerg

Hi Hansjoerg

Right now it looks like it will be not possible to download dive computers on Windows RT (ARM) tablets. There are probably 3 problems:

- I think there won't be any drivers soon to connect most dive computers (this would be a question for the computer manufacturers)
- WinRT Apps are sandboxed like on the iPad and have just a limited API (no serial communication)
- Desktop apps are not allowed

So if you want to make sure you can download your dive computer on a tablet, I would recommend to buy a x86 tablet / convertable with full Windows 8. I'm working right now on a WinRT version for Windows 8, which runs on ARM and x86 devices. From a feature set, it will be similar to the iPad version. For downloading and importing, you would have to use the desktop (maybe I'll create a touch optimized dive computer downloader for the desktop).

The only downside of x86 tablets is that they are probably a little more expensive. From the user experience they are the same as ARM tablets, but with the full power of the desktop. And you can run of course also the WinRT version of Diving Log on them. Here are a few examples:
